The town of Verín is preparing to host the XVII Monterrei Wine Fair, an event that will be held from 9 to 11 August . For three days, the Alameda square will become the epicenter of the wine world, offering neighbours and visitors not only the opportunity to taste the most outstanding wines designation of origin, but also enjoy a complete cultural and gastronomic program.
This was confirmed this morning in the official presentation of the event by the mayor of Verín, Gerardo Seoane; the president of the Regulatory Board of D.O. Monterrei, Jonatás Gago; and the councilor of Tourism, Culture, Festivities and Conservatory, Samanta Barreira.
On this occasion will attend a total of 19 of the 29 wineries that make up the denomination, “one more than in the previous edition, which is a historical figure and shows the great support of the sector this wine event”, recognizes the Chairman of the Regulatory Board of D.O. Monterrei, Jonatás Gago García.
This fair will take place again in the Plaza de la Alameda. In addition to the stands of the wineries, there will be food stalls suitable for all audiences. The opening hours of the stands will be as follows: Friday 09 from 19.30 to 24.00 h. (early sale from 19.00 hours), Saturday 10 from 12.30 to 14.30 h. and from 19.30 to 01.00 h., and Sunday 11 from 12.30 to 14.30 h and 19.30 to 24.00 h. In this edition, the prices will be again 5 tastings for ten euros and a personalized glass of D.O. for two euros.
The events of the XVII Monterrei Wine Fair will begin at 18.30, on Friday 09, with the Cofradía de los Vinos de Monterrei. It will be held in the Parish Church of Verín, and this year will be five people awarded. At 20.00 hours, and already in the Plaza Mayor will be held the inaugural act.
The mayor of Verín, Gerardo Seoane Fidalgo, stressed in his speech the positive impact that the fair has for the local community. Culture, gastronomy, music and wine will come together one more year in the framework of the Fair of the Vine of Monterrei, The European Commission, DG XIII, has recently published a report on the European Union’s research and development policy in the field of education. The same will be held in the Maior square and inside the park of the Alameda, throughout the days of 9, 10 and 11 August.
While for children are planned for Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August popular children’s games (in hours from 20:00 to 22:00 hours); for the adult public there will be interesting tastings and showcookings in the Alameda square. On Saturday, 10 August, at 13:00 hours, David Pascual, president of the Galician Oenology Association, will present “Elaborations, varieties and soils of D.O. Monterrei”. Later, at 20:00 hours, will be performed “Symphony of flavors: harmony of wines of Monterrei, gastronomy and music”, with the participation of Begoña Vázquez (O Regueiro da Cova), Miguel López (technical director of C.R.D.O. Monterrei) and José Manuel Salgado (professor at CMUS Verín). On Sunday, August 11, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the Alameda square, Juanjo Figueroa Treus, president of the Galician Association of Sommeliers (AGASU), will offer the talk “The Godello: Typicality and Mysteries of the King of the Whites”. All these events have a price of 5 € and limited places with prior registration.

On Friday 9, from 20:00 hours, the Band of Pipes of the City of Verín will liven up the official opening act with their live music. Already in the evening, at 24:00 on Friday 9, it will be the turn of Mercedes Peón. This singer and instrumentalist is one of the most innovative artists of the Galician and European folk; without abandoning the roots and tradition, is considered as one of the most charismatic international artists in world music. Captivated by the beauty of her native songs, dances and traditional tales, she recorded her first album “Isué” in 2000, followed by works like “Ajrú” (2004),”Sihá” (2007) and “Sós” (2008). His latest work, “Deixaas”, awarded the Prize of the Critic of Galicia, category Music, in 2018, is the result of an intense research on sound art and musical tradition.
On Saturday 10, the music will continue to be the protagonist, with live animation of the Band of Pipes of the City Hall of Verín between 13:The Exhibition Centre is open from 12:00 to 14:00, which will liven up the atmosphere on the fairgrounds. Already, at 24:00 hours, will perform in the Plaza Mayor Soul Teller. This London-based rock & soul artist has worked and shared the stage with legends such as Percy Sledge, Bonnie Tyler, Solomon Burke and Rod Stewart; as well as legendary producers such as Willie Mitchell (Al Green, Aretha Franklin) or Lawrence Boo (Bruno Mars). With more than ten albums released and thirty years of international career, there is no audience that can resist him. It should be noted that Soul Teller, as a sign of support for local artists, will have the participation of the following musical groups from Verona: José Gayoso (guitar and Steel Guitar), The Coral A time of Verín, the New Era Bagpipes Band, the Coral de Verín and the accordionist Edelmiro Mateo», has highlighted Samanta Barreira.
On Sunday 11, the fair will close the concert of A Quinkillada, at 22:30 hours. This band was born as an artistic response to the confinement of the pandemic. His music combines Latin rhythms and rumbas quinkis, and with his first album, Gozar, Sentir, Bailar, he promises to make all the attendees dance. The concert will take place in Plaza García Barbón.
