The Denomination of Origin Monterrei has reached record figures in 2022, not only for the number of hectares and wineries, but also for the verified liters. If in 2018, they stood at 2,626,590, last 2022 was closed with the amount of 4,707,350 liters, which reveals a growth of 79% in the last five years.
The data handled by the Regulatory Council reflect that in 2022, a million more liters have been verified than in 2019, and that 2021 was the first in which the 4.5 million liters were exceeded. Proof of the progressive and constant growth of the denomination, is that the number of applications verified in 2018 was 287, and that this last year has been 392, ie 105 samples more than five years ago.
Some record numbers we also found on the inscribed surface. While in 2017 the number of hectares of this wine territory was 566, in 2022 it reached 691. An increase that is also visible in the number of registered wineries, going from 25 to the current 28; increase of more than 10% in a five-year period, which means the largest growth of business fabric in Galicia wine.
More than 90% of the liters bottled under the protection of the D.O. Monterrei are sold in the national market, mainly in Galicia, northwest area (Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country), Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia. In terms of exports, sales are concentrated in countries such as the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom. However, and according to the latest export data, you can also find wine from the Denomination of Origin Monterrei in Denmark, Estonia, France, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Colombia, United States, Mexico, China, Japan or Australia, among others.
“These data and facts are the result of the great union that has been maintained in recent years and the hard work, both winemakers and wineries and all the technical and professional team of the Denomination. I can only be proud of being able to offer these figures today. I believe that Monterrei lives a stage of harmony, stability and gradual growth that has benefited each and every one of its members and, above all, that has positioned the Monterrei brand as a seal of quality, issue that has been as President of this body, my highest priority”. The President, currently in office, of the Denomination of Origin Monterrei, Lara da Silva Rodríguez, points out.
“We have to remember that these last years have not been easy due to destabilizing elements such as the Covid-19, but the data offered by Nielsen revealed a great resilience on the part of the sector, and a more than demonstrated technical competence and effectiveness of the entire team of the Regulatory Council, of which I am especially proud.”
Da Silva has stressed the importance of maintaining a critical spirit to continue improving the already overwhelming figures that support the professionalism with which it has been working and foresees a future in which continuous improvement will grow the Monterrei brand beyond the heights achieved. Also, the arrival of foreign capital, with new and ambitious projects of large groups is a great opportunity to set the growth in value shown by the data of the last study Nielsen, where the valuation of the Monterrei seal has stood out from other Denominations of Origin. “But we must not forget”, stresses the President, “the excellent work they have done and are doing small wineries, who have always bet from the beginning on the seal of quality of Monterrei”.

But we must not lose the long-term perspective, so it is essential to continue working on promotion and maintain a constant supply flow in both our priority and emerging markets.
