The auditorium of Verín has witnessed the celebration of the Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines, aimed at recognizing the figure of people who have contributed in the promotion and defense of the quality of wines of the Denomination of Origin Monterrei.
In this act of imposition of medals have been named two new confreres: Emilio González Afonso (subdelegado of the Government in Ourense) and María Isabel Mijares and García-Pelayo (the first woman winemaker in Spain and the first to preside over a wine regulatory council).
In the case of González Afonso, his election is based on being one of the promoters of the Feira do Viño de Monterrei, since the first edition of the same took place in 2005, when he was mayor of the municipality of Verín. While Mijares and García-Pelayo, one of the most prestigious personalities of the wine sector internationally, has been part of many promotional and training initiatives promoted in the last decade since the D.O. Monterrei.
The act of the Cofradía de los Vinos de Monterrei, headed by the president of the Regulatory Council, Lara Da Silva Rodríguez, has counted on the participation of the Conselleiro do Medio Rural, the vice president of the Diputación de Ourense, mayors of the regions of Monterrei-Conso Frieiras, members of the Brotherhood, winegrowers/ as, winemakers/ as, members of the tasting panel, members of the plenary or representatives of other councils regulating wine and differentiated Galician quality products, among others.
In this act has also been made a recognition to the Diputación de Ourense, for the support shown with the denomination, as well as the wineries, winegrowers/ es, tasters/ as technical personnel that make up the wine entity.

The Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines was created in 2013, and currently has 46 members (some of them appointed posthumously). Although initially this initiative was carried out during the celebration of the Feira do Viño in the month of August, in this edition it has been moved to the month of December, with the aim of having an event intended to extol the wines of Monterrei and its promotion.
