Next Friday, August 11 will take place the ceremony of the imposition of medals of the Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines, in which three new members will be appointed.
This event, which is again held in conjunction with the celebration of the Monterrei Wine Fair, will be held in the Parish Church of Verín, from 18.30 hours (free entry until full capacity).
On this occasion, the Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines will join, the current president of the Spanish Federation of Oenology (FEAE). Luis Buitrón Barrios studied enology at the School of Viticulture and Enology of Requena (Valencia). He began his professional activity in Galicia, working in wineries in Ribeiro, Valdeorras, Rías Baixas and, of course, Monterrei. He continues with his profession in the area of Ribera del Duero and León to finally return to Galicia. Between 1994 and 1999, he was technical director of C.R.D.O. Ribeira Sacra. From there he is dedicated to advising wineries in Galicia, Asturias and Castilla y León. From 2015 to 2021 he is president of the Galician Association of Winemakers. After being vice president of the FEAE, between 2017 and 2021, he reached the presidency of that entity in 2021, in addition to being a member of the board of UIOE (International Union of Winemakers Associations).
The new member of the Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines says that in this denomination of origin -one of the cradles of the godello- are being produced “of the best movarietales in Spain” of this variety. ” The brutal thermal contrast of Monterrei, “says Buitrón, “sculpts a unique maturation in the Godello”.
Likewise, the president of the professional collective of Spanish winemakers highlights the power of the Monterrei godello as one of the largest of all the peninsular territories. ” The monovarietals that are being produced today of godello in Monterrei and Valdeorras are among the best in the Peninsula”. It states that “its cultivation has a long tradition in Monterrei, although before this territory was more linked to reds, and is one of the cradles of its development”.
“Today the Godello is a prop of Monterrei, it is the emblem of the D.O., although until a few years ago the reds had been his figurehead,” he says. Due to the characteristics of its transition zone, with a very extreme climate in the climatic difference and with great thermal contrasts -as has just happened today- they cause great frosts and a lot of heat in summer, which allows maturations of high quality.
The Brotherhood of Monterrei Wines was created in 2013, and currently counts 49 members (some of them appointed posthumously).
